About

In Studio

I’m Michael. I’m a 25 year old fella’ originally from South Dakota who works as a Sound Designer online. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have such an extremely diverse job.

I don’t have the fanciest equipment, I don’t have a multi-million dollar studio, and I don’t currently have a grammy. What I do have, is an amazing fiancé, two crazy dogs, a supportive family, epic friends, and a profession that keeps me constantly learning.

MY STORY

I first stumbled into the audio production world when I was 16. My brother bought me a Nady PCM-200 Dynamic Mic and an M-Audio Fast Track Pro for Christmas. Both are mediocre at best, but they opened up a whole world of learning & opportunities. With Garageband at my side, I set out to conquer everything audio.

I originally planned on being an actor, but — with the advice of a mentor — decided to apply for a Sound Design Master’s Program my senior year of undergrad. Sure enough, I got in — full ride baby! — and the rest is history.

SO WHY SOUND DESIGN ACADEMY?

With this site, I hope to educate everyday people on the ins and outs of audio production. From editing your first podcast to producing your first album, I will teach you the skills that are needed to succeed.

So you might be wondering, “Why would a sound designer be teaching outside of a university?”

Well, I felt like there were a lot of gaps in my education that the university setting just couldn’t deliver. Besides, not everyone has the time, or the resources to attend a specialized school for audio — they’re crazy spendy!

Also, this site strives to be an amazing resource for discovering if you truly have a passion for audio, or if you might prefer keeping it a hobby.

Please read closely:

I wouldn’t call myself an audio guru, the techniques and approaches I use are not secrets, but they are often hard to come by for the typical reader. Everything I learn or teach either comes from a textbook, professor, or through actual experience. I’ll never recommend something I haven’t personally tried before.

If you ever get stumped or have any questions, please go ahead and shoot me a message. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know me, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Cheers!
